Business software is mostly domain knowledge wearing a technical costume. The framework is the easy part. Knowing what happens when two customers want the same appointment slot, or when a teacher marks attendance for a child who left last term, is what makes a system usable. Here is what eighteen years across these sectors taught us.
Education, schools and religious academies
Education is the sector we know most deeply, because we did not only build software for it, we built and still operate a school platform used around the world. That experience taught us things no requirements document contains. Teachers have roughly thirty seconds of free attention between students, so any screen that takes longer than that will be filled in later from memory, which means the data becomes fiction. Parents will not log into a portal regularly, so information has to travel to them by notification instead. Administrators need reports that hold up in front of a board, not screens full of raw rows.
Systems we build for education cover student records, class and group structures, attendance with automatic parent alerts, progress and lesson tracking, homework, subjects and curriculum completion, calendars and holidays, staff permissions, downloadable reports and oversight across several campuses from a single login. Every one of those requirements came from real schools telling us what was missing from what they had.
The clearest example of that work is QuranRecord, a complete school management platform for Quran education that we provide free of charge to schools, madrasas, mosques, private teachers and families. It runs on web, Android and iOS and serves more than a million page views a month, and everything in it exists because a school asked for it.

Charities, non profit and community organisations
Non profit organisations run on small budgets, part time staff and a rotating cast of volunteers, which places unusual demands on software. Systems must be simple enough that somebody who helps out on Tuesdays can use them without training, robust enough that a mistake cannot destroy a donation record, and cheap enough to keep running without a grant.
The work we do here includes membership and volunteer registers, donation and pledge tracking, event booking and attendance, communications by email and message, document libraries, and reporting for boards and funding bodies. Access control matters more than people expect, because a volunteer helping with an event should not be able to see the donor list.
We keep hosting costs deliberately low for these clients and prefer systems with very few moving parts, since every ongoing expense is money taken from the actual cause. Where an organisation genuinely cannot fund a build, we will say so early and suggest the least expensive route, even when that route is not us.

Retail and ecommerce
Selling online looks simple until the details arrive. Stock has to reflect what is actually on the shelf, or you sell an item twice and disappoint a customer. Shipping rules have to handle the awkward combinations of weight, destination and item type. Taxes vary by province and state. Refunds and partial returns have to leave the books in a state your bookkeeper can reconcile without ringing you.
Our retail work covers online stores, product catalogues with proper search and filtering, checkout flows tuned to reduce abandonment, inventory that syncs with what happens in store, shipping and tax rules, discount handling, order management for staff and reporting that matches accounting reality. We integrate with payment providers, shipping services and accounting packages so information stops being retyped.
The single biggest lesson from this sector is that speed is revenue. A checkout that takes an extra two seconds on a mobile connection loses orders every day, quietly, without anyone noticing. We treat performance as a commercial requirement rather than a technical nicety.

Professional services and consultancies
Firms that sell expertise usually run on a mixture of spreadsheets, shared folders and the memory of one long serving employee. It works until the firm grows, at which point nobody can answer simple questions such as which projects are profitable or which client has not been invoiced for six weeks.
For these clients we build client and matter records, time recording that people will actually complete, quotes and proposals, invoicing, document management with proper permissions, pipeline tracking and reporting that shows utilisation and profitability by project. The design challenge is always adoption. A time recording screen that takes more than a few seconds will be ignored, and ignored software produces worthless data.
Confidentiality requirements are usually strict in this sector, so permission models, audit trails and secure document handling receive far more attention than in a typical business system.

Trades, contractors and field teams
The defining fact about this sector is that the people using the software are standing up, often outdoors, sometimes with one hand, frequently with poor mobile signal. Any system that assumes a desk and a stable connection will be abandoned within a fortnight and the paper notebooks will come back.
We build job scheduling and dispatch, mobile job sheets that work when signal drops and sync when it returns, photo capture from site, materials and time recording, customer history, quoting from the van, and invoicing that flows from the completed job rather than being retyped in the evening. Large buttons, few fields and forgiving forms are not decoration here, they are the difference between adoption and failure.
Office staff get a different interface entirely, because their needs are the opposite. They want dense screens showing many jobs at once, quick filtering and the ability to move work between crews without a dozen clicks.

What happens when your industry is not listed here
Nothing changes. We have never claimed to arrive with expertise in a sector we have not worked in, and pretending otherwise would be the fastest route to a system nobody uses. What we bring instead is a reliable method for learning a business quickly, which is the skill that actually transfers between industries.
The process is the same every time. We spend time with the people doing the work. We ask what happens on the worst day rather than the typical one. We look at the spreadsheets and the handwritten notes, because those reveal the real process more honestly than any description. We write our understanding down and give it back to you, and you correct the parts we got wrong. By the end of that exchange we usually understand the operational detail better than any generic product ever could.
That is also why we are comfortable saying when an existing product would serve you better than a custom build. If a well established package covers ninety percent of your requirements at a fraction of the cost, that is the advice you will get from us, and we would rather configure it properly for you than sell you something unnecessary.
